The Idaho Youth Ranch in North Idaho is seeking families who are willing to provide foster care or adopt a child with special needs. “The goal of foster care is to reunite families, however, when reunification is not possible, a child in foster care may need a family willing to make a permanent commitment. Of the children who are adopted from the foster care system, about 70 percent are adopted by their foster families,” says Donna Euler, Director of Adoptions & Foster Care Services for the Idaho Youth Ranch in North Idaho. “In 2003 there were a total of 2,382 children placed in foster care, increasing to 3,349 children in 2008, so the need for foster care and foster adoption is growing in Idaho,” adds Euler.

The Coeur d’Alene office of the Idaho Youth Ranch partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare to recruit, train, license and support foster homes and foster/adopt families in the five northern-most counties of Idaho. In addition to foster care services, the Idaho Youth Ranch also offers counseling for crisis pregnancies, a newborn infant adoption program, home studies, and education and support for all types of adoption options.

A foster care provider is an individual or family licensed to provide temporary care for children who are in the custody of the state. In conjunction with the Department of Health and Welfare, foster families help children recover from the abuse and neglect they have experienced. To safeguard the well-being of children placed in foster care, Idaho law requires that every foster home have a valid foster care license. This ensures that the foster family and their home meet the required standards for care and safety of children. Foster families undergo an extensive evaluation of their suitability to meet the needs of abused and neglected children and provide a safe home environment. In addition, each foster care applicant must meet the following requirements:

Be 21 years of age

Pass a criminal history clearance in Idaho and a Child Abuse register check in each state where they have resided for the last 5 years

Complete the 27 hour pre-service training (PRIDE curriculum)

Home must meet Idaho licensure standards

If you are interested in becoming a foster care family or adopting a child with special needs, please contact the Idaho Youth Ranch in Coeur d’Alene at 667-1898 or via e-mail at deuler@youthranch.org
